The action of the story “The Last Exhibition” takes place in Nizhny Novgorod in 1896. The XVI All-Russian Industrial and Art Exhibition has opened. The young Emperor Nicholas II comes to see it. The story “Night Riders” is a continuation of the first. Lykov has completed his investigation and is going home. On the train he meets a suspicious fellow traveler. At night he gets off at a remote station. The detective, obeying his intuition, also leaves the train and follows the stranger...
