In the poem "The Lusiads" - a literary monument of world significance - Camões created a true epic of the Renaissance. This work was conceived as a national heroic poem in the spirit of the Odyssey, which would glorify the Portuguese - the descendants of the legendary Luz, the Lusitanians (as the Romans called them). "The Lusiad" tells the story of the sea voyage of one of the "great captains of that era, Vasco da Gama, who paved the way to the East Indies around the southern coast of Africa, and the first penetration of the Portuguese into this country.
