The novel by the famous Hungarian writer Kalman Miksat (1849-1910) tells about the tender and pure love of young Janos Butler and Piroshka Horvath. This novel begins with the romantic and touching story of the acquaintance of schoolboy Janos with the fragile girl Piroshka. For five years young people have been dreaming of happiness. Janos graduates from university, asks for Piroshka’s hand in marriage and receives consent. But soon an event occurs that pushes back the lovers’ plans for many years. The treacherous and cynical Baron Deri stands in their way. He lures Janos into a trap and forcibly marries him to his daughter Maria to hide the shame of her secret affair with the village priest.
