The book by a famous Russian orientalist is dedicated to the main milestones of political history, the features of the social structure and economic structure of the Golden Horde in the 14th century, during the period of its highest rise and the beginning of its decline on the eve of the Battle of Kulikovo. The Golden Horde was one of the most extensive and powerful states of the Middle Ages, from relations with which the fate of surrounding countries and peoples depended. In the mass consciousness, it appears as a power that enslaves Russian lands. However, the history of the Golden Horde was not limited to control over Russian tributaries and raids on neighbors. This state had an extensive management system, a special economic system, and an original culture. The author showed how the leaders of the Tatar tribes began to enter the political arena, gradually pushing aside the ruling dynasty of the descendants of Genghis Khan. One of these leaders was the famous Mamai, whose successful career and overthrow are also described in the book.
