“If you look for a long time into the abyss, then the abyss also looks at you” - these words belong to Friedrich Nietzsche, who is rightfully considered one of the predecessors of existential philosophy. Among its key concepts is the “borderline state” (“borderline situation” ) – a state of fear and anxiety before physical “nothing” (non-existence, death). Only in a borderline situation is true existence revealed to us: we become ourselves. Jean-Paul Sartre, the most famous representative of existentialism, in his works explored the influence of borderline states, fear of “nothing” in various areas of human existence: in love relationships, in social ( “worldly”), in search of one’s “I”. Sartre's most famous works on this topic are presented in this book.
