As a child, Sartre created many roles for himself, one of which was that of a writer. In his autobiographical story “Words,” he recalls that in the library he was “amused by the thoughtful ladies sliding from shelf to shelf in a vain search for an author who would satisfy their hunger; they couldn’t find him, because it was me - a boy getting under their feet, and they didn’t look in my direction.” Oddly enough, this invention turned out to be prophetic...
