“Goetia” is a guide to magic from the so-called “Solomon” books (i.e., grimoires, the authorship of which was attributed to the ancient king Solomon). It describes the ritual preparations, tools and spells necessary to summon the 72 spirits. This book was born thanks to the efforts of two of the most influential magicians of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Aleister Crowley commissioned MacGregor Mathers to prepare this work. It was first published in 1904. Crowley accompanied it with comments and additions, including his essay “Ceremonial Magic from the Point of View of the Initiate,” which largely predetermined the subsequent development of occult philosophy. This edition retains all the features of the 1904 version, but the material is supplemented by engravings by Louis Breton and several drawings by Alistair Crowley. Also included are corrected versions of the Preliminary Invocation and spells in Enochian, correspondence tables for 72 spirits, and commentaries that Crowley added by hand to his copies of the Goetia. The editorial introduction by Hymenaeus Beta, Outer Head of the O.T.O., examines the history of the relationship between Crowley and Mathers, and also defines the place of this grimoire in the "Solomonic" tradition.
