The volume is based on the contents of the first anthology of Greek epigrams, compiled in the 1st century. before Chr. and supplemented in modern times, which includes about 4000 epigrams, distributed by topic - love, funeral, table, satirical, etc. Among the authors are Plato, Sappho, Aesop, Aeschylus, Menander, Theocritus, Alcaeus, Meleager, Diogenes Laertius and many other poets. Initially, an epigram was a dedicatory inscription on statues, altars and other objects dedicated to the gods, and on tombstones (see epitaph). Gradually, thematic varieties of epigrams were formed: sententious-didactic, descriptive, love, table, and satirical. The epigram was distinguished from epic forms of poetry by its brevity and a clearly expressed subjective attitude to an event or fact. The epigram was written in elegiac distich, later in iambic and other meters. Plato's thoughts were expressed in the form of epigrams, Sappho wrote epigrams about the bitterness of early loss, Anacreon wrote about the fun at the feast. Masters of epigrams include Simonides of Keos, Asclepiades, Meleager. The heyday of the epigram in Greek literature was the work of the Hellenistic poets of the 3rd century. before Chr. - I century sl. Chr. (which formed the core of the so-called “Palatine Anthology” in 16 books), in the Roman - the satirical work of Martial (1st century AD). The volume also contains an editorial article and a detailed scientific apparatus.
