The events on which the novel is based are historically accurate: at the end of the 18th century, after a mutiny on the Bounty ship, a group of rebellious sailors fled from the island of Tahiti, where they could too easily be discovered by the British Admiralty, and found refuge on a deserted island Pitcairn, lost in the vastness of the Pacific Ocean and almost inaccessible for landing due to the topography of the coast. The island turned out to be fertile, and the rebels could have lived there happily until the end of their days, if strife had not begun between the British and the Tahitians who accompanied them on this journey.
