The second volume of the diaries of Emperor Nicholas II consists of two parts and covers the period from January 1905 to July 1918 - when the sovereign and his family died. This period (12.5 years) is extremely intense from a political point of view. The starting point was the first Russian revolution, which led to radical transformations of the political system of the Russian Empire and the formal and legal abolition of the unlimited nature of autocratic power and the creation of the State Duma. The most important event of this period is the Stolypin reforms. The First World War, the political crises of 1915 - early 1917, the February and October revolutions fit into the same period. The diary entries are interesting primarily because they provide an opportunity to get acquainted with the complex, sometimes contradictory reaction of the emperor to all these events. The diary material, unique in its meaning and emotional richness, dates back to the period from March 1917 to July 1918, when the author of the diaries was no longer in power, but was under arrest. The diaries of this period highlighted especially clearly the personal qualities of the former emperor, the warmth of family relationships, the tragedy and restlessness of the last Russian Tsar, the courage and Christian humility of him and his family.
