In one Leningrad artistic company of the late 1940s and 1950s, walking was not only a pastime. Artists Alexander Arefiev, Richard Vasmi, Valentin Gromov, Vladimir Shagin, Sholom Schwartz and the poet Roald Mandelstam, who later began to be called “Arefyevites” after the leader of the circle, preferred a different name. “Boltayka” is an aimless “hanging out” around the outskirts of a center like Kolomna, during which you can “chat” and see something memorable.
