The novel by an unknown Greek author, “The History of Apollonius, King of Tire” (otherwise known as “The Tale of Apollonius of Tire”), which has come down to us in a Latin translation, is one of the few surviving works of ancient fiction aimed at the mass reader: with an entertaining plot, incredible adventures, intense intrigue. The appendix presents brief retellings of two other examples of this genre made in the 9th century by the Patriarch of Constantinople Photius: the novels of Iamblichus “The Babylonian Tale” (“Babylonica”) and Anthony Diogenes “Amazing Adventures on the Other Side of Thula”, lost in the Middle Ages Century.
