Joseph Stiglitz explains why America, and with it other countries, are in crisis. The main reason is a blind faith in the efficiency of markets, in self-regulation, in the idea that the more rich corporate owners become, the better off everyone is, since they will inevitably turn their excess profits into investments. According to Stiglitz, markets are unable to operate effectively without proper government regulation: otherwise society gets poorly managed globalization, increasing corporate market power and unjustified income inequality. The author shows how we got to this situation and gives recommendations on what needs to be done to move forward. The book presents an alternative to Reaganomics and Trumponomics - an alternative that is based on the achievements of modern economic science and should ensure shared prosperity.
