“When at the beginning of the 19th century. Sh.'s poems first became known, and he was recognized as the forerunner of romanticism. “Ch.,” writes Sainte-Beuve, “was the herald of new poetry; he brought with him a new lyre; “It was, however, still missing a few strings, but now these strings have been added by his followers.” However, Sh. is the herald of new poetry only in theory, in his poem “L'Invention”. His idylls and elegies, on the contrary, are imbued with the strictest classicism and, except perhaps for the lyrical mood, there is not a single hint of motifs characteristic of the romantics.
