“Historical drama by the last decade of the reign of Queen Elizabeth began to be inspired by patriotic ideas. The “Great Armada” that threatened the shores of the Green Island was dispersed, and the “sea maiden reigning in the West” now appeared in the aura of an invincible defender of the homeland. National consciousness awoke in English society with particular force. The mood became elevated, proud, full of self-confidence and faith in one’s strength. Of all the English history told by Golinshed and Toll, one involuntarily attracted attention to the figure of the conqueror of the French, the brave King Henry the Fifth, about whose exploits folk ballads were sung. Around 1588, an unknown author gave the London public the pleasure of seeing a performance of “The Famous Victories of Henry the Fifth, Containing the Glorious Battle of Agincourt...” The work is given in the pre-reform alphabet.
