“Folklore is literally “ethnic studies.” This term was invented in England in the middle of the 19th century to designate in one word ancient beliefs, prejudices, customs, rituals, proverbs, conspiracies, sayings, songs and fairy tales that are still living among the common people according to tradition (see Thoms's article in "Athenaeum", 1846, p. 862). From ancient times only fragments of folk songs have reached us (they are collected from Berck-Hiller, “Anthologia Lyrica”, Lpts., 1897), fairy tales (for example, the tale of Cupid and Psyche as retold by Apuleius) and proverbs (collected in "Novus Tesaurus Adiagiorum" by Binder, Lpc., 1866, and Otto, "Die Sprichw ?rter der'R? mer", Lpc., 1890)..."
