“Percy Bysshe Shelley is one of the greatest English poets of the 19th century. Born in the county of Sussex on August 4, 1792, he drowned in the Mediterranean Sea between La Spezia and Livorno on July 8, 1822. With his fiery belief in the sovereign and all-pervading reason, his complete disregard for human views, beliefs and habits inherited from the past, Sh. belongs to followers of the ideas of the Age of Enlightenment. Godwin’s “Political Justice,” imbued entirely with the revolutionary nationalism of the nineties of the 18th century, became very early his gospel; but Godwin’s ideas were transformed by Sh. into beautiful poetic visions, boldly conceived and original. These images, airy and foggy, lull the mind with their wondrous artistry.”
