The tragedy was staged in 428 BC. e. This is one of those tragedies of Euripides, where man is represented as a plaything of the gods. The Cretan princess Phaedra, the young wife of Theseus, fell in love with her stepson Hippolytus, the son of an Amazon. In the first version of the tragedy (“Hippolytus covering himself with a cloak”) Phaedra personally declared her love to the young man, and he covered himself with a cloak out of shame. The Athenian public was shocked by such a scene, and the poet reworked the play, turning the wet nurse into a pimp.
