In ancient times, Euripides was called “a philosopher on stage.” Indeed, in the conflicts between the mythical heroes acting in his tragedies, the most important issues of human existence and human morality are resolved. And at the same time, each tragedy embodies the truth of characters, the truth of passions, which allowed another great Athenian tragedian, Sophocles, to say about his younger contemporary that he portrays people “as they are.” All these properties, combined with the powerful poetic talent of Euripides, brought immortality to his creations - not only in books, but also on many stages of the world. This edition for the first time gives the complete Euripides in the original translation of Innokenty Annensky (at the same time, F.F. Zelinsky’s editing of previous editions has been removed). The translation of two tragedies - “The Entreaties” and “The Trojan Women” - are published for the first time based on the Inn manuscripts preserved in the archives. Annensky. The “Additions” section contains the tragedy “Rhea” attributed to Euripides, and the tragedy “The Bacchae” translated by F.F. Zelinsky.
