Grandfather comes home from abroad twice a year to visit his adult children. His son is a loser. My daughter is expecting a child from the wrong man. Only he, the patriarch, wise in life, is almost perfect - at least, it seems so to him... The novel “The Father's Contract” with irony and bitterness talks about how difficult it is to find a common language with the people closest to you. What does it mean to be a good father and husband, mother and wife, son and daughter, sister or brother? It would seem that our roles are changing, but how do you find a balance between family obligations and personal freedom, the desire to be close to those you love and the temptation to run away from those who sometimes hurt you? Jonas Hassen Kemiri (b. 1978) is one of the most popular writers of modern Sweden, winner of many literary awards. His debut novel, On the Red Eye (2003), became the best-selling novel in Sweden and was filmed in 2007. The novel “Everything I Don’t Remember” (2015) received the prestigious August Strindberg Prize and has been translated into 25 languages, including Russian (2021). In 2020, the novel “The Paternal Contract” (2018) became a finalist for the US National Book Award in the category of translated literature. Published in Russian for the first time.
