The monograph, based on a wide range of primary sources, offers a new interpretation of one of the most dramatic episodes in the history of European science of the early modern era - the inquisition trial of Galileo Galilei in 1633. The process itself and the events preceding it are examined through the prism of various contexts of the era: theological, political, sociocultural, personal-psychological, scientific, patronage, rhetorical, logical, philosophical. The author’s research shows that the traditional interpretation of this event (Galileo’s case as an example of persecution of the great scientist by church obscurantists and as an illustration of the confrontation between advanced science and church dogma) does not entirely correspond to reality, and the widespread opinion that Galileo was put on trial by the Inquisition for defending the Copernican theory is also refuted. The trial of Galileo is a complex, multifaceted and contradictory event, as eloquently evidenced by I. Dmitriev’s book.
