English philosopher and writer Colin Wilson explored the curious human interaction of desire and malaise that first makes us scramble to acquire something and then leaves us bored once we have it. Noting that these same dynamics often thwart our highest aspirations, Wilson reminds us that talented "Outsiders" such as Nietzsche, Dostoevsky, Van Gogh, T. E. Lawrence and William Blake had clear glimpses of a stronger and more meaningful image life, but still found themselves on the verge of suicide or madness due to disappointment in their daily lives.
