Translation from French A.A. Vasilyeva, N.L. Sukhacheva. M.: Ladomir, 2014 - 552 p. ISBN 978-5В6218-523-2Format: PDF, DjVuQuality: scanned pages + text layerLanguage: Russian

Mircea Eliade’s monograph on shamanism, like his “Treatise on the History of Religions” (1949), is devoted to the search for the meaning of existence — overcoming “profane” time. The author contrasts it with his concept of hierophany - sacred, echoing the feeling of cosmic “Unity”. In part, this is an attempt to revise, perhaps even justify, one’s own experience of communion with profaned history, reflection on the renewal of personality through the experience of “suffering, death and resurrection,” which, according to the author, is the ultimate goal of “archaic techniques of ecstasy.” Performed for the present edition, the translation includes sections included in the first Russian-language collection of works by M. Eliade “Space and History” (1987). It is based on the author's text of the French edition of the book (1951) and takes into account the authorized English translation by V.R. Trask (2nd ed.: 1974). The translator's comments also reflect information about the latest research on shamanism. This edition clarifies many erroneous spellings of the original, which were preserved in all translations of the book, including in the first complete edition of “Shamanism...” in Russian (Kyiv, 1998 - translated from English). The introductory article provides a critical assessment the concept of hierophany developed by M. Eliade in the context of shamanistic beliefs and the history of religions that generalizes them.
