Vsevolod Sergeevich Solovyov (1849–1903) - Russian prose writer, poet, critic, journalist; eldest son of the famous historian S. M. Solovyov. In 1870 he graduated from the Faculty of Law of Moscow University, after which he left for St. Petersburg, where he first served in the imperial chancellery, then as an official for special assignments at the Ministry of Public Education, and as a censor of dramatic works at the Main Directorate for Press Affairs. From 1896 until the end of his life he was chairman of the commission for organizing public readings. He began his literary career with poems, then published critical essays in magazines. He gained fame as a prose writer with a number of historical novels, the popularity of which was determined mainly by the colorful depiction of antiquity and the dramatic nature of the plot. Most of them were initially published in the magazine “Niva”, and later in “Sever”, largely ensuring the success of these publications. This volume publishes the novel “The Young Emperor”, which tells about the short reign of Peter II. As a twelve-year-old boy, he ascended the throne; as a fourteen-year-old boy, just before his wedding, he died of smallpox. Therefore, the trace left by this emperor in Russian history is shallow. But many important and interesting events happened during the two years of his reign.
