Vsevolod Solovyov (1849–1903), son of the famous Russian historian S.M. Solovyov and the elder brother of the poet and philosopher Vladimir Solovyov, is the author of a number of remarkable historical novels that describe the events of the 17th–19th centuries.

The third volume of collected works includes the novel “Sergei Gorbatov”, which opens the epic “Chronicle of Four generations", consisting of five books. The hero of the novel, Sergei Gorbatov, is a Russian diplomat, a friend of Paul I, working in France, gripped by the revolution of 1789.
