Excerpts from the diary include entries about T. G. Gabba, about K. Simonov (“Half a year in the “New World”), Boris Pasternak, Joseph Brodsky and Alexander Solzhenitsyn. Read together, these notes, made in different years, show that S. Marshak was right when he said about Lydia Chukovskaya’s first work (“In Memory of T. G. Gabbe”) - “this is your genre.” Entries about Boris Pasternak and “In Memory of T. G. Gabba” were prepared for publication by the author, and the rest were selected posthumously based on the diary of Lydia Chukovskaya. Adjacent to “Excerpts from the Diary” is the essay “Near Death” - about the last days of Marina Tsvetaeva, also written by the author based on his diary. The book also includes memories of Frida Vigdorova and Academician A.D. Sakharov.
