The dramatic poem “The Tragedy of Man” (1862) by Imre Madacz is a unique work not only in Hungarian, but also in world literature. It artistically comprehends the path of humanity from Adam and Eve to the “last” people on Earth, dying under the cooling Sun. “The Tragedy of Man” is often compared to Goethe’s “Faust”: both the conflict and the philosophical content of the work require this. But there is no talk of borrowing or imitation here. Madach’s independence is evidenced by the very method of artistic solution to the grandiose problem that he raises in the poem. Adam and Eve, having tasted the fruit of knowledge, long to know what lies ahead for them. And Lucifer is in a hurry to provide them with such an opportunity - having plunged the first people into a hypnotic sleep, he leads them through the main stages of future history, calculating instill in them the idea of the futility, meaninglessness of life and struggle. But he is wrong. The meaning of the work is not only in the affirmation of a stoically active life strategy, but also in the affirmation of such an important principle for Madach as free will.
