The work of Arseny Tarkovsky (1907–1989) is a significant phenomenon in Russian poetry. D. S. Likhachev considered A. A. Tarkovsky the greatest poet of the 20th century, and his poetry of “astonishing purity as a healing art.” Tarkovsky's work, the origins of which come from the classical poetic tradition, is distinguished by the freedom of the poetic voice, fullness of sound, precision of rhyme.
