The anthology, prepared by the famous orientalist and translator of Japanese poetry Alexander Dolin, includes classical masterpieces of famous poets of the late Middle Ages (XVII - early XIX centuries). Along with such popular names as Matsuo Basho, Yosa no Buson, Kobayashi Issa, Matsunaga Teitoku, Ihara Saikaku, Kamo Mabuchi, Ozawa Roan Rai Sanyo or the monk Ryokan, the reader will find in the book many new authors whose creations adorn the golden fund of Japanese and world literature. The collection presents a rich palette of poetic genres: philosophical and landscape haiku tercets, sophisticated waka (tanka) quintuples, examples of lyrical and didactic poetry in Chinese Kanshi, as well as poems by Zen masters and mentors, in which the subtlety of an aesthetic worldview is combined with the emotional intensity of constant self-knowledge. A valuable addition to the masterpieces of the classics are collections of humorous poetry (senryu, kyoka, haikai no renga), as well as translations of folk songs composed by the inhabitants of the “fun quarters”. The book recreates the historical panorama of Japanese poetry of the Edo era in its amazing genre and stylistic diversity and introduces the reader to the largest poets of the period of the Japanese cultural renaissance, which stretched throughout the entire period of Japan’s self-isolation.
