"Lolita" is Vladimir Nabokov's main and best book; the script for "Lolita", by the writer's own admission, is his "most daring and risky venture in the field of drama." Written in Beverly Hills shortly after the triumphant publication of the novel in the United States, it was called “the best script ever created in Hollywood” and formed the basis for the film of the same name, directed by Stanley Kubrick. Unlike the novel, the script has different lighting and different placements. spotlights, a different angle of view, roles are distributed differently. Translating the novel into the language of drama, Nabokov changed thousands of details, invented new characters, and composed episodes that allow us to take a fresh look at the unique pattern of the tragic life of Humbert and Lolita. By releasing the Lolita script as a separate book in 1973, Nabokov completed the artistic development of his long-standing plan, first outlined in 1939 in the story “The Wizard.” This publication represents the first translation of the Lolita script into Russian and includes, in addition to the author’s preface, the surviving in the Nabokov archive are episodes from an early draft of the script, letters from Vladimir and Vera Nabokov to Stanley Kubrick and other recipients regarding the film adaptation of Lolita, as well as a detailed essay by the translator and compiler of the book Andrei Babikov, revealing hitherto unknown aspects of the art of the great writer.
