The book of the outstanding Russian-American sociologist Pitirim Aleksandrovich Sorokin, published in Boston in 1956, was first translated into Russian and published in Russia in the year of its 50th anniversary. However, the publication undertaken was not caused by the round anniversary, nor by the resounding success acquired by the “American Sexual Revolution” in different countries of the world. The hot topicality of the topic, the events repeated today in Russia, force us to turn to the work of the scientist. Here we will find a clear sociological analysis of the forward movement and filling of all spheres of American social life in the mid-twentieth century with the ideology of the sexual revolution (“sex oozes from every pore of American life”). With the rationality of a scientist, Sorokin traces the conditions for the emergence of sexual revolutions in different civilizations throughout human history and, with the passion of a prophet, warns of a society undergoing a “dangerous drift towards the abyss.”
