The reader is offered for the first time a translation of the autobiography of the most prominent sociologist of our time, Pitirim Aleksandrovich Sorokin (1889-1968), published in the USA in 1963. P. A. Sorokin was born, educated and worked until 1922 in Russia. Ideological opposition to the new government led to his expulsion from the country along with other outstanding scientists and writers. Since 1923 he lived and worked in the USA. The autobiography is a most interesting and living testimony left to us not only by a scientist, but also by a major figure in the Socialist Revolutionary Party, the Secretary for Science and Education of the Provisional Government. What makes the book particularly attractive is the intimacy of Sorokin’s memories, his personal perception, assessment of people, historical events of which he happened to be a contemporary and participant. Of particular importance are the chapters of the autobiography devoted to the study of human creative abilities (chap. 14-17), the activities of the Harvard Research Center for creative altruism under the leadership of P. Sorokin (chapter 15).
