Paul Gauguin was one of the four greatest masters of post-impressionism. Along with Paul Cezanne, Vincent Van Gogh and Henri Toulouse-Lautrec, he took the lessons of impressionism, and then exploded this style from the inside, creating his own unique artistic language. Gauguin sought to convey the unity and dependence of man and nature, the beauty and brightness of the world. The harmony of the paintings, the warmth emanating from the colors, does not fit with the artist’s disorder and tossing, and indeed with his life in general. But perhaps there is no paradox in this - it’s just that all the harmony, beauty, kindness, and ability to make people happy that the artist was given was embodied in his work.
