The Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles houses one of the finest private art collections. It belonged to the American tycoon Paul Getty, one of the richest men of his time, who opened the collection to the public during his lifetime. The museum was founded in 1974, and since 1997 has been located in its current building, designed by Richard Meier. The museum's collection reflects the passions of its collector, who was most interested in antique marble and bronze sculpture, Renaissance painting, carpets from Persia and the Savonri manufactory, as well as French furniture and carpets of the 18th century. After the Getty's death in 1976, the museum continued to actively expand its collection. The most high-profile acquisition is a bronze sculpture of a winning athlete, the authorship of which belongs to the ancient Greek sculptor Lysippos. This celebrated work, found in 1964 in the Adriatic Sea, cost the museum just under four million dollars. Cover: V. Van Gogh. "Irises". Fragment.
