In the first half of the 19th century, independent America declared its main goal to expand its territory towards the Pacific coast. However, not all was well in America itself. Before our eyes, the gap between the North and South of the country deepened. The reason for this division was the attitude towards the issue of slavery. When it seemed that the last hopes for a compromise began to disappear, a tall man with a scraggly beard and rough features appeared in America, sometimes melancholic and prone to depression, but never losing his sense of humor, who had made a difficult journey from a poor, unknown farmer to the most powerful politics in the state. This man was Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865). Lincoln went to the polls with the idea of freeing slaves and abolishing slavery throughout the United States as the main obstacle to the normal development of the country. He very succinctly formulated his political credo in the famous “Gettigsbury Speech” of 1863: “A government created by the people, from the people and for the people.” However, Lincoln's election as president caused a division of the country, the secession of slave states and a civil war. Leading the North, Lincoln brought matters to the complete capitulation of the southerners and the introduction of the 13th Amendment to the Constitution of the country, prohibiting slavery and any forced labor. During his presidency, a transcontinental railroad to the Pacific Ocean was also built, a new banking system was created, and the agrarian problem was solved. As Congressman Henry Dawes said of Lincoln: “No man had the political acumen to gather around him people who wholeheartedly supported the government and rivals who professed completely opposite views, irreconcilable enemies. The politician paid for his beliefs with his life, dying from an assassin’s bullet. Lincoln became one of the central historical figures in the consciousness of the American people. He is rightfully considered the savior of the nation and at the same time is a vivid and extraordinary example of a man from the people who achieved everything with his own intelligence and hard work and became the embodiment of the “American Dream.” As a sign of the gratitude of the American people, a memorial was erected in Washington to the sixteenth President Abraham Lincoln as one of the four presidents who determined the historical development of the United States of America.
