1826 Intelligence of the Black Sea Fleet intercepts a report from a Turkish agent, signed with the code name Menelaus. The fleet commander instructs his favorite student, Prince Ordyntsev, to find and neutralize the spy. The tracks lead Dmitry to St. Petersburg, and here he is forced to ask for help from the new capital's bailiff, Captain Shcheglov.
