In 1950, the leadership of OKB A.N. Tupolev's project team was tasked with selecting such values of the wing area, aircraft mass and engine thrust at which the aircraft would have the following flight and tactical data: bomb load - normal - 6000 kg, maximum - 12,000 kg; armament - according to the project of the "86" aircraft; crew - six people; maximum speed at ground level – 950 km/h; practical ceiling – 12,000 -13,000 m; flight range with normal bomb load - 7500 km; take-off run without accelerators – 1800 m: take-off run with accelerator – 1000 m; mileage – 900 m; Climbing time 10,000 m – 23 min. Work on the project received the OKB code “494” (fourth project in 1949). It is from this project that the straight line begins, which led to the creation of the prototype “88” aircraft. and then the serial Tu-16.
