The president of Lockheed's advanced projects department (Skunk Works), Ben Rich, personally took videotapes to Kelly Johnson's hospital, from which the founder of Skunk Works could see how one of the most unusual aircraft of the 20th century was taking shape. Johnson never trusted electronics, saying he would rather believe in a "hydraulic radio." The videos Rich showed greatly surprised Johnson. Johnson was even more surprised when he learned that the plane was not only equipped with a fly-by-wire control system, but was also designed using a computer program. Johnson has always been a fan of European design: drawing board, Whatman paper and drawing board. The Lockheed veteran asked languidly: “I hope you won’t build this disgrace on my Skunkworks?”
