With a baggage of fresh knowledge and a veterinary diploma, young James Herriot arrives in Darrowby, a small town lost among the hills of Yorkshire. No, the textbooks did not say a word about the realities of the English countryside, the customs of local farmers and the authentic work of a veterinarian, which Harriot dreamed of so much. But no matter what ridiculous situations he found himself in, no matter what difficulties he encountered, his truly English sense of humor and endless love for animals always helped him out. Alfred White (real name James Herriot) returned to his adventures as a novice veterinarian several decades later ( he began writing at the age of 50). A collection of his funny and touching stories, “About All Creatures – Great and Small,” was published in 1972 and was a huge success. This book was followed by others. Today, Harriot's name is known all over the world, his works are popular among readers of different generations and have been translated into dozens of languages. The book was first published in Russian in 1985 in an abbreviated form, with the omission of individual fragments and chapters. This edition contains the complete translation with restored notes.
