The poetry of Konstantin Dmitrievich Balmont (1867–1942) is one of the achievements of Russian literature of the 20th century. His poems captivate with their unique sophistication, pure melody and rare “magic of sounds.” However, Balmont the prose writer is almost unknown in Russia, although prose occupies an important place in his legacy. This book presents for the first time the autobiographical works of the poet, revealing the pages of his complex, contradictory, and sometimes dramatic life, which were published only abroad, where Balmont after leaving Soviet Russia lived in exile since 1920. K. Balmont’s prose is not only a wonderful example of literature, it is also a vivid human document of a great Russian poet doomed to death, historical evidence of the tragic years of Russian history.
