"Loneliness and Freedom" (New York: Chekhov Publishing House, 1955) is the only lifetime book of critical prose by G. V. Adamovich (1892-1972). Compiled from newly edited and partially rewritten articles published in emigrant newspapers and magazines (mainly in Latest News and Sovremennye Zapiski in the 1920s-1930s, but also in Russian News and New Russian Word "), she summed up the literary results of the first wave, caused interesting controversy in the emigration, setting the tone and level of conversation and to a large extent determining the post-war literary situation. In the appendices to the annotated edition there is a history of the preparation of the book, reconstructed from Adamovich’s correspondence, as well as a complete set of his letters to the editors of the Chekhov Publishing House, published for the first time. The publishing layout of the book is preserved in PDF A4 format.
