The novel by Nikolai Verevochkin, depicting the history of the virgin town from its creation in the 60-70s to the devastation of the 90s, is full of specific, recognizable details of the time. At the same time, the novel, like all of Nikolai’s work, is philosophical in the good sense of the word. Moreover, it is myth-making. Built on the site of the flooded North Kazakhstan village of Ilyinki, Stepnomorsk, as repeatedly emphasized in the text, was not just a regional center, but also a “center of paradise”, which absorbed all the best from the city and the village - a music school, an amateur theater, aviation and a grove instead of a central square , fishing, mushrooms, in short, the harmony of nature and civilization. “...In such cities of the golden mean, in contrast to capitals and remote villages, a society arose that, in principle, should not exist.”
