In Krashevsky’s work, a special place is occupied by novels about the uprising of 1863, about the events preceding it, as well as about emigration after its failure: “Child of the Old City”, “Spy”, “Red Couple”, “Russian”, “Hybrids” , “Jew”, “May Night”, “In the East”, “Wanderers”, “In Exile”, “Grandfather”, “Us and Them”. Krashevsky witnessed the brewing explosion and spoke critically of the policies of Margrave Wielopolsky. He adhered to moderate positions (he was “white”), and after the uprising he was ordered to leave Poland. He emigrated to Dresden, where he created this series of novels about the events he witnessed. The novel “Spy” is dedicated to the difficult work of spies in the Russian service during a time of growing discontent. The novel “The King in Nesvizh” tells how King Stanislav Poniatowski visited Nesvizh with in order to establish relations with the Vilna voivode Karol Radziwiłł “Pana Kokhanku” and gain his support. The book also includes stories by Kraszewski.
