This book includes two novels by Józef Ignacy Kraszewski, one of the classics of Polish literature. The novel “Masław” tells about the events of the 1030s, when, after the death of King Mieszko II, unrest began in the Old Polish state. The son of the late king, Casimir, later called the Restorer, returns to the devastated country to restore order to it, but Casimir is not the main character of the story. The first place comes to the confrontation between the loyal warriors of the late Mieszko and the former royal cupbearer Maslav, who, wanting to become the new king, seizes estates and fortresses, but only one does not want to submit to him - Olszow Castle. The main theme of the novel "Kunigas" was the struggle of the inhabitants of the Grand Duchy Lithuanian with the knights of the Teutonic Order. The plot was based on a real event - the defense of the Lithuanian fortress of Pilenai from the Teutons in 1336, when the inhabitants chose to commit suicide rather than surrender, and in the center of the story is the fate of the Litvin youth. Being the son of a Pilena kunigas (prince), in early childhood he was captured by the crusaders, but returned to his homeland...
