Jim Dixon works as a history teacher at an English provincial university. He has been teaching there for the first year and is still undergoing a probationary period. From the very beginning, he, having a fair ability to get into stupid situations, makes a bad impression on his colleagues. It’s true that Dixon doesn’t like his colleagues either. But there is nothing to do - everyone wants to get into the staff, so, mentally drawing caricatures of his colleagues and making funny faces, Dixon tries to look like everyone else. However, at a musical evening hosted by an eccentric dean, Jim meets the girl of his dreams, and this meeting ultimately leads to unexpected results...
