Anacreon (559–478 BC) was born in the Asia Minor city of Teos, traveled a lot in different regions of Greece, lived at the courts of tyrants, in particular, on the island of Samos, at the court of the famous Polycrates. The name of Anacreon is now known mainly thanks to later, Alexandrian and Byzantine, imitations of his lyrics, on the basis of which the “Anacreontic” poetry of the 18th-99th centuries arose. Anacreon's work is characterized by a light, carefree attitude to life, glorification of wine, sensual love, and fun. Among the Russian translators of Anacreon was Pushkin, who even called him his teacher in the comic poem “My Testament to Friends” (1815).
