Russian literature is deprived of a very useful way to improve itself, along with other enlightened European peoples, due to the lack of well-translated ancient exemplary writers. Wanting, if possible, to contribute to the benefit of the Russian muses and was filled with respect for the first Roman lyricist, I accepted I had the courage to translate, mostly imitatively, several of his odes and placed them in the last edition of my works. They received flattering approval from supportive readers. This success prompted me to continue my feat: so, translating into verse, in general with the previous ones, more than a fourth of the odes of Horace, 1 now published collectively, to please those of my readers to whom my first experiences of this kind did not seem unpleasant, in order to adore their even more condescending judgment about this work of mine, I consider it necessary to accompany it with some explanations.
