D. Stedman-Jones analyzes how neoliberal ideas about individual freedom, free markets and deregulation were transformed into electorally successful political programs between the 1940s and 1980s in Great Britain and the United States. Trying to answer the question of why, faced with a deep economic crisis in the 1970s, politicians and officials turned specifically to neoliberal ideas, the author paints a three-dimensional picture that combines (a) the intellectual history of the origin, development and spread of neoliberal ideas in the 1940s–1970s years, (b) economic history from the post-war boom to the stagflation of the 1970s, and (c) the evolution of party politics in the US and UK during this period. The book provides an interesting history of the percolation of ideas from university departments into society and economic policy. The main characters of the book are the Mont Pelerin Society, the first Chicago school and numerous think tanks, as well as K. Popper, L. von Mises, F. Hayek, M. Friedman, J. Stigler, representatives of the public choice school. Particular attention is paid to the role and intellectual evolution of Friedman and the Chicago school of economics in general.
