Carefree, feminine, trusting, Marie Antoinette was pampered by the admiration of the courtiers. She thought of her life as a series of pleasures, not suspecting that outside the Paris Opera House there was another world mired in poverty and hatred. And this world fell upon her in the face of the French Revolution, declared her the center of all vices and threw her under the knife of the guillotine... A historical novel is rarely truthful. It is precisely these exceptions that include the work of Zweig, a thoughtful, honest historian, subtle psychologist and excellent storyteller.
