The book “Magellan's Exploit” is one of the peaks of the work of the classic of Austrian literature, the master of biographical prose Stefan Zweig. At the center of the story is the Portuguese Fernao de Magellaes, who made the greatest voyage of the Age of Discovery and went down in history under the name of Magellan. Sailing from the Spanish coast on five fragile sailing ships into the unknown, his expedition - thanks to the incredible courage and iron will of its commander - circumnavigated the world and in practice proved the sphericity of the Earth. Of the two hundred and sixty-five members of the expedition, only eighteen returned home on one patched-up ship. Magellan himself died absurdly during the days of his greatest triumph on the Philippine island of Mactan; his feat was appropriated by others, and only many decades later was justice restored. Stefan Zweig's book is considered the best biography of the great navigator.
